How many solar panels fit on board?
For most boats, 100–300 W works well. Semi-flexible panels suit curved roofs and sprayhoods, while rigid panels produce more energy for their size and generally last longer.

How large a solar kit does a boat need?›
For summer day sailing, a 100 W panel and a 100 Ah LiFePO4 battery are often enough. Longer passages with a fridge and navigation typically need 200–300 W of panels and a 200 Ah battery.
Can I install boat solar panels myself?›
You can normally install the DC side — panels, charge controller and battery — yourself as long as the voltage stays below 50 V DC. The 230 V AC side must be installed by a qualified electrician.
Do I need an inverter on board?›
Only if you want to use 230 V appliances such as chargers or a coffee maker. Much marine equipment runs directly on 12 V, which is both more efficient and safer.
Can the panels withstand saltwater?›
Yes, marine solar panels are built for the environment. Make sure the connectors are rated at least IP67 and keep all cable penetrations properly sealed.
How long does the system last?›
Solar panels typically last 20–25 years in a marine environment, a LiFePO4 battery 10–15 years or 3,000–6,000 cycles, and MPPT controllers and inverters around 10–15 years.
